Inspired by Perrault's fairy tale, Jules Massenet's Cinderella is a far cry from it: no pumpkin, no carriage, and even fewer slippers to try on. What's the point, since Cinderella and Prince Charming recognize each other immediately? Are they not experiencing the same loneliness despite their different social positions? Massenet's choice of female voices for these two roles underscores their soulful kinship in a seductive score that deliberately mixes styles. Mariame Clément approaches the work with finesse. With a princess-making machine, candy-pink crinolines and a grandiose ballroom, but also liquettes and sneakers, the director plays with clichés and the Belle Époque - the era in which the score was created - with nods to the Electricity Fairy and the cinema of Méliès. It's a great way to reflect on myth and social convention... while keeping your childlike soul.
