Lecture by Marie-Françoise BERRENDONNER.
The Peytel affair.
Marie-Françoise BERRENDONNER
What happened on a cold, rainy night in November 1838, just outside Belley, at a place called Pont d'Andert? Two young victims and a quickly identified culprit, who happened to be a prominent Belley man. A swift trial, a merciless and controversial verdict that reverberated throughout the regional press and as far away as Paris. And let's not forget the intervention of a famous writer, who was to rekindle passions. These are the elements that make up the Peytel affair, which this conference aims not to elucidate, but rather to shed some modest light on.
