At the crossroads of the 19th and 20th centuries, revolutionary artistic movements of profoundly philosophical scope were emerging in all European countries. At the time, Imperial Russia was an integral part of Western Europe and one of the most powerful countries on the planet, where the arts underwent extraordinary development in the fields of theater, music and painting.
The last decades of the 19th century saw the birth in Russia of a whole generation of painters who, through their talent and courage in all kinds of artistic and spiritual pursuits, became the founders of 20th-century aesthetics. Seeking to take the arts to a higher level, transcending not only the notion of "utility", but also that of "materiality", they created, by various means, a painting that, denying form, proposes a concept of absolute values above time and space. In this titanic work, alongside great masters such as Matisse and Picasso, we find Russian painters: Kandinsky, Malevitch and others, seen today as the founders of so-called "abstract" art. Their lives and careers were disrupted by the dramatic events of the early 20th century, forcing some to emigrate, others to a premature end. The work of some remained forgotten and even banned in their native countries for over half a century, but we are now rediscovering it with all the power and sublime spirituality of their thought.
