Description
Can you name five famous female composers?
It's not that easy!
Largely overshadowed by their male peers but no less talented, women musicians are vastly under-represented in the entire repertoire, whatever the era. And yet! Ever since Hildegarde de Bingen in the 11th century, numerous female composers of genius have, each in their own way, contributed to the edifice of music. Their works are jewels... treasures unfortunately too well hidden and not often unearthed.
Les Estivales de Brou has set out to remedy this injustice and highlight several of these women of genius who, despite the obstacles they faced (within their families and a society that confined them to other functions) were able to compose veritable nuggets.
Unable to pay tribute to all of them, the Estivales de Brou concert honors female composers of the 19th and 20th centuries: Fanny Hensel Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Cécile Chaminade, Clémence de Grandval, Mel Boris and Lili Boulanger (winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome). Through them and their remarkable and moving works, which the festival invites you to discover, and pay tribute to all the others.
